Journalism has a problem. You can fix it.
Seventy percent of journalists are white, according to Zippia, a career search survey. A study at the University of Kansas found that minority students are underrepresented in journalism programs across the country.
Journalism has a duty to tell diverse stories, and to do that, we need to have diverse voices covering these stories. My name is Grace Gormley. I am the Editor-in-Chief of the nation's first high school sports magazine, the Viking. I took action in my own community and ran a free journalism camp offered to underserved students in my school district. I wanted the students to feel that journalism was a space they could feel comfortable sharing their voices and their stories. My students wrote about bullying, drug abuse, climate change, and so much more. I watched them grow in confidence over the course of the camp. This program made a difference in the lives of these students, and hopefully empowered them to pursue journalism in the future. I want to help you create a program like this yourself. |
